Shiatsu for autism

What is shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a touch-based therapy, which uses pressure of the palms of the hands and thumbs to work the body following certain energy lines. At the same time this pressure stimulates the flow of blood and releases tightness in the body. The slow and steady pace of the pressure calms the mind leaving you relaxed, more opened up and more centred. Being in this quiet state helps to process and integrate your daily experiences. It helps to get more in touch with your own body and supports a better sense of who you are.

How can it help?

Many children and adults with autism are under constant stress and experience some level of anxiety. They may also suffer from lack of sleep, hyperactivity, and many physical problems such as rashes, profuse sweating, bowel problems, challenging behaviours or other difficulties.

Shiatsu aids to release blockages, pain and tension to optimalise functioning of body and mind. Through holding certain points and applying pressure to specific areas, regular treatments can for example help with:

  • Sleep quality

  • Lowering stress and anxiety levels

  • Strengthening the immune system

  • Regulating emotions

  • Accepting touch

  • Improving motor coordination

  • Headaches

  • Ease constipation

Long-standing problems will require regular treatments over an extended period of time. The more the person gets used to shiatsu, the greater the impact of a session with longer lasting effects.

Suitability for autism

  • Shiatsu is given through loose, comfortable, warm, clothing covering arms and legs.

  • There will not be any sudden movements, manipulations or cracking.

  • The treatments follow a sequence which makes them predictable.

  • Shiatsu is about using pressure which is firm yet gentle.

  • It aids with self-regulation and balancing of the body systems.

  • It is a holistic treatment

For families

Ana offers workshops for families to learn simple yet effective shiatsu which parents can do at home with their children. These techniques can easily be incorporated into the daily routine and apart from the benefits described above, help strengthen the bond between you and your child. Sessions take place in the comfort of your own home and are spread out over three appointments of 90 minutes each. The sessions involve hands-on practise for the parent and require for the parent to kneel down on a mat.

Price: from £75/session.
